Homes of HOPE: A New Beginning

Since 2020, real estate prices have surged across South Florida, putting homeownership in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade Counties farther out of reach for local families across the area. 

And when you’re a single mother attempting to find safe, affordable housing for your family, this difficult situation becomes even more daunting. 

In many instances, it can even feel impossible. 

At HOPE South Florida, we’re sensitive to these challenges and are committed to helping single parents in Broward County remain united with their children during this season of unpredictability. 

That’s why we, along with our key strategic community partners, created the Homes of HOPE program. 

What is Homes of HOPE? 

Homes of HOPE is HOPE South Florida’s support program offering emergency housing assistance for single mothers in South Florida. Through this initiative, we help women who are navigating housing insecurity obtain stable living situations while also equipping them with the tools they need to regain financial independence. 

These houses are more than just four walls and a roof — they’re homes where families can build true lives together.

Each of our Homes of HOPE is built on four key principles: stability, dignity, belonging and hope. Every unit features a single bedroom, a private bathroom for each family and a kitchenette. 

Additionally, the homes are fully furnished, so families who move into these units will have one less obstacle they need to overcome in order to have a comfortable living space for their families. For example, each unit comes with two sets of bunk beds and can sleep a family of four. 

Nancy Ramos, who sits on our Board of Directors at HOPE South Florida and is the Assistant Vice President of Loyalty and Onboard Marketing at Royal Caribbean, wrote, “Homes of HOPE is a direct extension of HOPE’s calling to reflect Christ’s heart for the vulnerable. HOPE exists to restore dignity, strengthen families, and build pathways to wholeness. All rooted in the belief that every person is created in the image of God and worthy of love.”

Who can participate in Homes of HOPE? 

Currently, single mothers with one to three children are eligible to participate in our Homes of HOPE program. To be considered, families need to apply and meet with one of our advocates to determine eligibility. 

Kathleen Cannon, president and CEO of UnitedWay Broward, whose organization is a key HOPE partner and relentless supporter of families struggling with housing insecurity, believes in the power and potential of this program for single mothers in South Florida. 

She wrote, “Homes of HOPE will change the trajectory of every family that is served for generations to come. They will give single mothers an opportunity to not just survive, but to thrive and will solve generational poverty for every family they help.”

In South Florida, there are not many free housing programs for single mothers who need support during their season of difficulty; HOPE aims to fill the gap. 

“We need housing for all income levels in Broward, and everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to call home,” Cannon wrote. “The more we help those most vulnerable, especially single mothers, the better our entire community becomes!”

How to Support Our Mission

If you feel called to support South Florida’s vulnerable mothers and children, there are several ways you can help. 

According to Ramos, here are some of the most common ways you can partner with HOPE South Florida to bring these Homes of HOPE to life: 

• Financial gifts to support renovations, furnishings, and ongoing family care
• In-kind donations such as bedding, household items, children’s supplies, and welcome kits
• Volunteer service, offering time, prayer, mentorship, or hospitality

“Every act of generosity becomes part of God’s story of restoration for the families we serve,” Ramos wrote.
