You’re Not Alone: How HOPE South Florida Supports Families Through Housing Insecurity

When you’re going through a major life change, one of the hardest things to face is loneliness — the feeling that nobody cares or that you don’t have a support system to help you navigate whatever life has thrown your way.

We were built to live in community, but where can you turn when your circumstances bring you face-to-face with housing insecurity, financial instability and mental or physical health challenges? 

You need a team of support to surround you, and that’s what we aim to provide at HOPE South Florida.

What Services Does HOPE South Florida Offer?

HOPE South Florida offers a holistic, whole-person approach to helping individuals and families in Broward County achieve housing stability.

According to Royale McCloud-Smith, a family advocate who works directly with individuals and parents seeking services through HOPE, that whole-person philosophy is central to how the program operates.

“HOPE takes a whole-person approach to helping individuals and families become stable,” she said. “Depending on the program, clients may receive housing navigation, rental and move-in assistance, case management and family advocacy, financial empowerment, safe parking, transportation support, and mental health support through our community partners at THRIVE.”

She continued, “We also connect clients to resources for employment, food, transportation and other needs that may affect their ability to maintain stable housing.” 

For Broward residents who are navigating the complex world of housing instability or who are dealing with factors that could potentially lead them to an insecure situation, HOPE offers a comprehensive collection of resources to help them regain independence.

Who Is Eligible for HOPE South Florida’s Support Services?

HOPE South Florida’s programs are open to families — not individuals — who are experiencing situational housing instability

Beyond that, each HOPE program has its own additional eligibility requirements, ensuring that families receive the specific type of assistance they need.

“We look at factors such as a client’s housing situation, household size, income, and individual circumstances,” McCloud-Smith explained. “Most importantly, we want to make sure that the program is the right fit for the person or family, and that the resources available will meaningfully support their journey toward stability.”

Once a family is deemed eligible to receive support, HOPE staff completes an intake report to help identify what services you need and how they can best support you on your journey toward stability. 

McCloud Smith emphasizes that HOPE takes a dual approach to accessing needs: “We work with [clients] to create a path forward that addresses their immediate needs while also focusing on long-term housing stability.”

How Do Families Benefit From HOPE South Florida’s Programs?

Major life transitions like losing a job or experiencing housing insecurity can shake you to your core, but they don’t define who you are or what value you hold as a person. And while these life events may weigh on your present circumstances, they don’t define your future. “Through practical assistance, meaningful relationships, and compassionate support, we want every person we serve to know that they are seen, valued and not alone,” McCloud-Smith said. 

She also added that this is deeply personal work, and for her, one of the highlights of being a family advocate is watching clients experience what they never believed would be possible. 

“For me, the most rewarding moments are when a client reaches a milestone they once felt was out of reach—getting the keys to their new home, becoming financially stable, finding employment, or simply having the confidence to take their next step,” she said. “Knowing that I was able to play even a small role in that journey is what makes this work so meaningful to me.”
